Times Square New Year's Eve Through The Years

New Year's Eve was first celebrated in Times Square in 1904 to commemorate the opening of the New York Times new headquarters.  That year the festivities included fireworks and 1-9-0-4 illuminated atop the building.  However, the first "time ball" wasn't dropped until 1907 after the City banned the fireworks. The first ball was made of iron and wood and adorned with one hundred 25-watt light bulbs. With the exception of 1942 and 1943 when the ceremony was suspended due to wartime "DIMOUT" of lights in New York City, the ball has dropped every year since.

What is the "Time Ball"?
The first "time ball" was installed atop England's Royal Observatory at Greenwich in 1833. This ball would drop at one'o'clock every afternoon, allowing the captains of nearby ships to precisely set their chronometers (a vital navigational instrument).
It is believed that there have been approximately 150 time balls installed around the world. The tradition is carried on today in places like the United States Naval Observatory in (Foggy Bottom) Washington, DC, where a time-ball descents from a flagpole each day at noon - and, of course, New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve COVID Style
The ball will drop as time doesn't stop for a pandemic, however, for the first time since 1907, the ball will drop in Times Square without spectators. Revelers will be able to enjoy festivities virtually, by visiting the official Times Square website for information on games, and music. For a more traditional experience from the comfort of your home, you can tune in to NBC beginning at 10:00 pm. For the full NBC lineup, visit their New Year's Eve page.
