The first generation of Corvette (C-1) was introduced late in the 1953 model year. Originally designed as a show car for the 1953 Motorama display at the New York Auto Show, it generated enough interest to induce GM to make a production version to sell to the public. First production was on June 30, 1953. Only 300 were hand-built, with a sticker price of $3,498 – about $32,000

John Wayne was one of the first owners of the two-seat fiberglass convertible, which came with a 150-hp straight-six engine. This generation was often referred to as the "solid-axle" models (the independent rear suspension was not introduced until the second generation).
 
It was available only in white with a red interior, and it had just two luxurious options: a heater and an AM radio.
