The first and only generation of the front-wheel drive Chevrolet Citation was sold from 1980 through 1985.  The Citation was offered as a three-door or five-door hatchback, or a two-door notchback coupe, which was exclusive to the Citation. At the same time GM offered the Buick Skylark and Oldsmobile Omega, both offered as two-doors; as well as the Pontiac Phoenix, also available as a hatchback,

Although GM anticipated 70% of customers would order the 6-cylinder option, the gas shortage of 1979, where there were lines at the gas pumps, helped spur the sale of the gas-efficient 4-cyclinder Citation.  
​
Over 800,000 citations were sold during the model year, priced under $6,000. It was the best selling car in the United States and was awarded Motor Trend Car of the Year for 1980.
